Places to stay in Pitlochry. Spotlight on Queen’s View

Book to stay at Rosemount Hotel and visit Queen’s View

As a suggestion for a memorable afternoon for those visitors having found a place to stay in Pitlochry, the breathtaking vista at Queen’s View is just a few miles drive away: Head north out of Pitlochry town, past Faskally Caravan Park and take the road for Tummel Bridge, to your left. Almost immediately you will cross over the Garry Bridge. Park up and walk back on to the bridge to observe the stunning pass of Killiecrankie – an absolute “must-see” during the splendid Autumn months.

Continuing along the quite narrow, winding “road to the isles”, drink in the beautiful scenery for about 5 miles, when you will come to the Car Park at Queen’s View Visitor Centre. A path heading upwards will take you to the viewpoint where the feast for the eyes takes on a quite breathtaking quality.

Press on a little further to Allean Forest

If you want further and different perspectives of this special place, continue 300m further along the road to the Allean Forest walk. You may park your car and head uphill to a small abandoned village of derelict crofts. One of these has been reconstructed and re-roofed so that you can walk inside. The feeling of how it must have been to live with the sheep and cows and a handful of children and dogs in this small stone shed is quite poignant. Impressions of the prospect are further brought to life by the footprint of the village houses scattered about.

If you are only staying for a few days, you may prefer to return to Pitlochry at this stage, but if the mind is set to venture further you could head on for Tummel Bridge, past the lovely Strathtummel Inn overlooking Loch Tummel and towards Schiehallion. One choice at Tummel Bridge is to return to Pitlochry via Foss – another stunning prospect passing high over Loch Tummel and further gorgeous views. Alternatively, you may press on to Loch Rannoch or to Aberfeldy. These routes will be discussed in later coverage.
