Sondheim's delightful Broadway classic is considered to be one of the crowning achievements of mid-twentieth century musical theatre. Gypsy is loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist, and focuses on her mother, Rose, "the ultimate, aggressive showbiz mother." Her dreams and efforts to raise two daughters to perform onstage are revealed, casting an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life.
