The Science behind the Splendid Colour

Contrary to common perception, leaves generally don’t “change colour” in Autumn, apart from those that turn the stunning reds of green-leafed trees, such as the Maple. This is a result of residual sugars remaining in the leaves once the day length shortens and the night-time temperature lowers, triggering the production of anthocyanins -pigments of purple and red.

The vibrant yellows and oranges that we enjoy so much, are present in the leaf all year. However, they are masked by the presence of the green pigment, chlorophyll, which produces sugars to feed the tree all summer long with the aid of sunlight. As day length shortens, the chlorophyll gradually disappears revealing the glorious tones beneath.

The strength and endurance of colour that we are so enjoying this year is down to the absence of frost. As soon as this appears, the trees shut down and shed their leaves, heralding the onset of winter. The later onset of frost is the perfect signal for taking Autumn Breaks in Perthshire. A feast for the senses is guaranteed around every turn in the road. We have launched our Last minute Autumn Breaks Scotland campaign with great discounts to encourage folk to experience this spectacle at very little cost.
