Dog friendly Weekend Breaks in Pitlochry Perthshire
One of the many great things about Pitlochry Perthshire as a dog friendly holiday destination is its central location. This makes it a fabulous location for weekend breaks. Because the town sits at the geographic centre of Scotland and just off the A9, it can be reached from most parts of mainland Scotland within three or four hours, which is about the acceptable journey time for a weekend break. Additionally, many dogs don’t travel well so the shorter journey is an added bonus.
Take a look at out weekend break offering and see how well this fits in with a quick escape with the dog. We hope you like it and we get to meet you:-
Perthshire Walks with the Dog
Pitlochry has a network of highly scenic hikes and trails that our dog-owning guests relish. There are also places to be enjoyed just a little further afield:-
Aberfeldy is worth a visit. It’s a typical Edwardian Highland town, packed with charm and interest. Independent shops, galleries and cafes offer a very pleasant few hours browsing. There’s a cinema that shows a mix of mainstream and arthouse films.
Several scenic walks offer the prospect of free and healthy pastime. These include the Birks of Aberfeldy (bit of a climb) and the riverside walk to Grandtully. If there’s a dog in company, please bear in mind you’ll be passing close to sheep at one stage on the latter option.
For the Birks of Aberfeldy, head up the Crieff road and park up in the car park provided for the walk. We’ve covered detail of this and many other Pitlochry walks in our article on Perthshire Walking Breaks.
Walk from Aberfeldy to Grandtully
You can park near Dewar’s Distillery for the Grandtully walk. Continue along the pavement to the graveyard on the left where you’ll pick up one of those little green signs – Grandtully 4 miles. From here, a path winds gently down to the Tay and continues along the river through a gate to a large open grazing field with sheep. Dogs are requested to be on leads at this point. Cross a small burn by a wooden bridge and enter another open field.
At this point, you’ll likely be in the company canoeists and rafters drifting happily downstream on this still part of the Tay – They’ve yet to reach Grandtully, where the concern becomes one of bodies hurling through the air as they take to the rapids – which is why they came, after all!
Meanwhile, your path takes you blissfully onwards through a grove of Silver Birches.
Finally, your walk reaches Grandtully, under a bridge that carries the A827 to arrive at a large car park. There is a choice of refreshment – either at the coffee house of the Highland Chocolatier (there is a garden area which is ideal for sitting with your dog) or at the Inn on the Tay, where the aquatic entertainment, as viewed from their decked balcony, can sometimes be quite lively.
You can retrace your steps to Aberfeldy or take a bus (one per hour).
Finally, we hope we get to meet you. We are proud to be one of the pet friendly hotels in Perthshire and it makes our day when a new gleaming canine face pops around our door. Dogs add a great deal to the dynamic of our day and there’s a great camaraderie amongst our dog-owning guests. Please make our day. Come visit our dog friendly hotel in Pitlochry!
